MVC and Carlos Oliveira Honour Mouzinho da Silveira with Sculpture on Corvo Island
26 Jun
On 20 June, MVC, together with sculptor Carlos Oliveira, unveiled a sculpture on the island of Corvo, in the Azores, in tribute to Mouzinho da Silveira, a prominent figure in the island’s history. Mouzinho was one of the main advocates for local autonomy, having played a key role in elevating the village of Corvo to the status of town and in the establishment of its own municipal council.
The work, through its combination of materials, conveys a symbolic and visual message: basalt, sourced from the island itself, dark and dense, evokes the surrounding sea, while Moleanos limestone, of a lighter tone, represents the island of Corvo itself, highlighted by the bust of Mouzinho. The sculpture has been installed in the square outside the Town Hall.
The inauguration was attended by various regional authorities, members of the community, and visitors, in a moment that proved to be emotional and a profound acknowledgement of Mouzinho da Silveira’s legacy.
